This medium sized sturgeon represents a key demographic within our population breakdown. As part of our award-winning, monitoring and assessment program, we collect data on all the fish encountered in our program. Sturgeon are measured and tagged with a unique tag that will forever be associated with that individual fish. Each time the fish is re-encountered, we learn more and more about their life journey, experiences, rate of growth and travels. We also learn about its favourite hang-outs - areas that they are frequently encountered, and therefore indicate to us its importance.
We are especially interested in how sturgeon in this particular fishes' size range, because they are approaching maturity and may be getting ready to spawn for the first or maybe even the second time. These fish represent the future generation of Fraser River white sturgeon and we are working hard to ensure that they have the most ideal conditions possible for their survival.
This adoption was made by Honourary Chair Rick Hansen, in appreciation for the extra effort made in securing eulachons (sturgeon's favourite meal!) from Prince Rupert to be used in our conservation and recovery efforts.
