This young sturgeon inspires us to believe that one day the Fraser River White sturgeon population will recover. Our volunteers encountered this sturgeon during a time of marked decline in fish within this size range.
One of our priorities is to address issues facing these young sturgeon to ensure their survival to maturity. Issues include habitat erosion, lack of key food sources and by-catch mortality due to use of gill-nets. We are working to protect spawning areas, food sources like Eulachon and ensure that habitats are protected from development and industry.
We look forward to sharing ongoing updates and news about this sturgeon as our volunteers encounter it in the future.
Thanks to Sharon Collins' adoption of this sturgeon for her grandson, Layne Stewart.
